Miila Westin: Sammuva valo – Myyttiset 3
Sarjakuvaseikkailun vaikuttava päätösosa!
10-vuotias Eevi on mummolassa, jota saartaa tulvavesi. Yllättäen hän saa luokseen maahisystävänsä Otson, jolla on vakava viesti.
Pian alkaa jakoaika, ja silloin voimakas Louhi uhkaa sammuttaa auringon. Eevi ja Otso laativat suunnitelman Louhen pysäyttämiseksi. Siihen he tarvitsevat apua itse Ukko ylijumalalta.
Päästäkseen Ukon luo Lintukotoon Eevin ja Otson täytyy löytää lovi. Pian käy kuitenkin ilmi, että suunnitelman laatiminen on paljon helpompaa kuin sen toteuttaminen.
Ratkaisua etsiessään he kohtaavat kummat lintukotolaiset, vastahakoisen Ukon ja valoisan Päivättären.
Aika käy kuitenkin vähiin. Tasapainoa ylläpitävä maailmanpuu on jo alkanut horjua. Ehtivätkö he pysäyttää Louhen ajoissa?
Myyttiset on muinaista itämerensuomalaista kansanperinnettä lapsille tutuksi tuova sarjakuvaromaanisarja, jonka eeppinen päätösosa kertoo yhteistyön ja yllättävienkin liittolaisten voimasta.
Jyrki Nissinen: Kiimaiset maantiesuolan imeskelijät – 20-vuotisjuhlapainos
Sarjakuva tuhoutumis kotibile timantti duunista – nyt väreissä!
Kiimaiset maantiesuolan imeskelijät on Jyrki Nissisen ensimmäinen pitkä sarjakuvakirja. Sen ensimmäinen painos ilmestyi Happy Horse Comicsin julkaisemana vuonna 2005 eli 20 vuotta sitten. Toisen painoksen julkaisi Zum Teufel 2009. Sekin on ollut jo kauan loppuunmyyty, joten vuorossa on kolmas painos.
Juhlan kunniaksi päätimme julkaista värillisen ja kovakantisen version. Värityksen on tehnyt sarjakuvataiteilija Benjamin Bergman. Mukana kirjassa on kokonaan ennennäkemätön 20 sivun valokuvabonusosio!
“Kimsissä” pyritään perehtymään kotibileiden anatomiaan, savustetaan valas, poltetaan tupakkaa ja ruumiita. Road movien hengessä hahmot kuten Kokis Kari, Ari, Samos ja Laser Box etsivät tietään onneen.
Otto Sinisalo kirjoitti ensimmäisestä painoksesta Sarjainfossa 4/2005 mm. näin: ”Sarjakuvakriitikko kohtaa ennen pitkää saman ongelman kuin minkä tahansa muunkin alan kriitikko.
Tympäisevä kyynisyys vaanii ihmistä, joka lukee työkseen sarjakuvia. Aina ei pystykään innostumaan teoksesta, vaikka se olisikin ammattimaista työtä.
Silti toisinaan tulee vastaan sarjakuvia, jotka ovat niin aseista riisuvia, että kriittiset mekanismit pettävät täysin.
Pitää nostaa kädet ylös ja todeta nauttivansa, vaikka syytä ei osaisikaan täsmällisesti ilmaista. Minä teen nyt niin.
Kiimaisten maantiesuolan imeskelijöiden ei pitäisi toimia. Se kuitenkin toimii, vastoin kaikkia todennäköisyyksiä ja kriittisiä odotuksia. Nissinen on löytänyt oman persoonallisen äänensä.”

Naarassarjat – Täydellinen kokoelma
Vuonna 1992 sarjakuvakenttä oli hyvin miesvaltainen. Johanna ”Roju” Rojola ystävineen halusi muuttaa tilannetta.
Syntyi Naarassarjat-lehti, joka sisälsi naistekijöiden sarjakuvia. Lehtiä oli tarkoitus tulla vain yksi, mutta suosion innoittamana niitä tuli lopulta seitsemän.
Naarassarjat toimi julkaisualustana monille sittemmin tutuiksi käyneille tekijöille: Kati Kovács, Katja Tukiainen, Terhi Ekebom, Maria Björklund, Tiina Pystynen, Anne Streng… Sarjakuvien aiheet ja tyylit vaihtelevat, mutta isoa osaa yhdistävät feministiset teemat.
Naarassarjat inspiroi lisää vastaavia projekteja, kuten Tiitu Takalon toimittama Irtoparta-lehti ja netissä ilmestynyt Nettinarttu.
2000-luvun toisella vuosikymmenellä saatettiin todeta, että työ oli tavoitteessaan eikä sarjakuvataiteilijoiden lokeroiminen sukupuolen mukaan ollut enää tarkoituksenmukaista.
Tämä kirja sisältää kaikki Naarassarjojen seitsemän numeroa näköispainoksina, Rojun muisteloita lehden teon ajoilta sekä Leena Romun artikkelin Säyseän feminiinisyyden ihanteita murskaamassa.
Kirjan ovat toimittaneet Petteri Oja ja Johanna Rojola. Ulkoasusta vastaa Iiva Vilvas.

BD West esittelee parhaita eurooppalaisia lännensarjakuvia.
“Kiitos sinulle” on tositapahtumiin perustuva sarjakuva rakkaudesta, taiteilijuudesta, yhteiskunnallisista pohdinnoista ja pyrkimyksistä kohti seesteisyyttä.
Tarina koostuu lyhyistä muistelmamosaiikeista vuosien 2020-2025 ajalta. Aiheet kumpuavat Kukko-taiteilijapariskunnan elämästä, eli Hannasta ja Aaposta – jälkimmäisen näkökulmasta.
Sarjakuva on myös nähtävissä vastinparina Hanna Kukon Unetkin synkronoituu! -teokselle (Zum Teufel 2023).
Teoksen leimuavan värityksen on toteuttanut Hanna Kukko.
Peter O’Donnell: Modesty Blaise – Huipputason petturi
Huipputason petturiin on koottu on viisi Modesty Blaise -seikkailua kolmelta eri vuosikymmeneltä.
Jim Holdawayn piirtämä nimitarina Huipputason petturi sekä Viikinkikopla ovat 1960-luvun puolivälistä.
Niissä Modesty ja Willie Garvin jäljittävät tiedustelupalvelun myyrää ja kadonnutta ystäväänsä Sir Gerald Tarrantia.
Sitten paljastuu, että Blaisen rikollisen taustan, Järjestön, entinen nuori kätyri on liittynyt Euroopan rannikoita ryöstelevään, viikinkejä esittävään norjalaiseen konnasakkiin.
Aikahyppäys 1980-luvun lopulle, Samantha ja kerubi -seikkailuun, siirtää sankarit Enrique Badia Romeron kynänjäljen ja kavalien kidnappaajien maailmaan, jossa heidän avukseen tulee topakka pikkutyttö Samantha polkupyöräjengeineen.
Uusimmat albumin tarinat ovat Romeron piirtämät, 1990-luvun jälkipuoliskolla ensimmäisen kerran ilmestyneet Durangon viidakkosissit ja Lavastettu murha.
Modesty ja Willie päätyvät ensin Venezuelaan, viidakkosissien temmellyskentälle, sitten pirullisen murhajuonittelun pyörteisiin Willien maalaispubin Treadmillin kotoisissa maisemissa.
Huipputason petturi on yhdestoista Jalavan julkaisema Modesty-albumi. Sen tarinoita ei ole julkaistu alkuperäisessä strippimuodossa albumeissa, eikä kahta tuoreinta tarinaa ole aikaisemmin julkaistu suomeksi.
Ola Fogelberg: Janne Ankkanen ja kumppanit
Pullasorsa kansakunnan kaapin päällä
Janne Ankkanen oli ensimmäinen suomalainen sarjakuvapersoona. Nokkava oman aikansa äänitorvi, joka pelottomasti kääkätti paremman yhteiskunnan puolesta – varsinkin itselleen paremman.
Jalmari Finnen ja Ola Fogelbergin luoman Jannen lento jäi lyhyeksi mutta ikimuistoiseksi. Janne Ankkanen ja kumppanit sisältää hahmon koko tarinan.
Mukana kirjassa on myös värillinen Pekka Puupää -tarina sekä paljon muuta harvinaista materiaalia Ola Fogelbergin tuotannosta.
Ola Fogelberg, eli Fogeli (1894-1952), oli kuvataiteilijan työn ohella monitaitoinen ideoija ja keksijä.
Kirjassa on satu Matin metsämatka esimerkkinä Fogelin kehittämästä väripainotekniikasta. Parhaiten hänet muistetaan ikonisesta Pekka Puupäästä, hahmosta joka hyväntahtoisuudellaan paikkasi sen mihin oma älli ei riittänyt.
Jalmari Finne (1874-1938) oli kirjailija, suomentaja, teatterinjohtaja ja historiantutkimuksen uranuurtaja Suomessa.
Finnen muistettavimpiin teoksiin kuuluu kirjasarja Kiljusen herrasväestä. Aikaa kestävät Kiljuset edustivat meillä uudenlaista huumoria. Kirjoissa ei kumarreltu ketään eikä tyrkytetty opetuksia, vaan edettiin ryminällä ja riemulla.

Benjamin Abitan & Olivier Schwarz: Pikon ja Fantasion seikkailuja – Pikon kuolema
Merten syvyyksissä tapahtuu jotakin outoa.
Samaan aikaan, kun kustantamo Dupuis valmistautuu viettämään vuosijuhliaan, Korallionissa kuhisee – aiemmin niin salaisesta merenpohjakaupungista on tehty turistikohde, ja muutoksen takana vaikuttaisi olevan sankareiden vanha vastustaja Zorbul. Niinpä Piko ja Fantasio lähtevät tutkimaan Korallionia, mutta siellä odottavat vaarat uhkaavat jopa kaiken kokeneita seikkailijoita.
Piko ja Fantasio on eurooppalaisen sarjakuvan suursuosikkeja.
Upeasti piirretty Pikon kuolema on sekä huikea silmäys sarjan menneisyyteen että täysin omanlaisensa seikkailu täynnä yllättäviä ja jännittäviä käänteitä.
Kalmakumpu on sarjakuva lemmikkieläinten hautausmaasta ja sen hoitajasta.
Suurin osa hahmoista perustuu lasten tekemiin ehdotuksiin. Lapset ovat voineet ilmoittaa mukaan kaipaamansa oikean lemmikin tai keksityn hahmon. Roope Eronen on toteuttanut Kalmakummun lasten ideoiden pohjalta.
Tämä on ensimmäinen Kalmakumpu-sarjakuva. Lukijoilla on mahdollisuus ehdottaa omia hahmoja tuleviin tarinoihin. Tervetuloa mukaan!
Alexia Othonaiou & Christos Anthis: Pelikorttinainen
Tunnettu asianajaja Marinos Tachtsidis löytyy asuntonsa jääkaapista kuolleena, suussaan pelikortti. Patakymppi.
Stavros Kaliatis, taideyliopiston professorikokelas, murhataan viikkoa myöhemmin. Hänen sydämensä on leikattu irti ja sen tilalle on jälleen jätetty pelikortti, ristijätkä.
Seuraavana on ruutukuningatar. On joulukuinen aamu vuonna 2008. Ateena syttyy tuleen eikä pelikorttinainen saa sitä huomiota, jota hän ehkä toivoi. Murhat loppuvat, ikään kuin hän olisi yhtäkkiä muuttanut mieltään.
Mutta ei.
Hän ei ollut vielä luovuttanut.
Viimeisen kahdeksantoista kuukauden ajan hän oli vain katsellut korttejaan ja pelaillut pelimerkeillään ennen kuin jatkoi lahtaamista.
Alexia Othonaiou on Ateenassa asuva taiteilija, sarjakuvantekijä ja kuvittaja. Hän on tehnyt useita sarjakuvakirjoja ja lastenkirjoja, ja hänen sarjakuviaan ja kuvituksiaan on julkaistu merkittävissä kreikkalaisissa sanoma- ja aikakauslehdissä. Pelikorttinainen perustuu Christos Anthisin samannimiseen kertomukseen.
Hanna Kukko: Katso eläintä + TARRA-ARKKI
MUKANA TARRA-ARKKI.
Katso eläintä katsoo erään tavallisen miehen ja hänen kohtaamistensa kautta suoraan ihmiskeskeiseen eläinkäsitykseen.
Lihansyönnin oikeutus käy yhä vaikeammaksi, kun yhtäkkiä einespitsasta nouseekin kinkuksi tapetun sian haamu.
Hanna Kukon sarjakuvakirja Katso eläintä johdattaa tarkastelemaan ihmisen eläinsuhdetta ja sen vääristymiä maagisen realismin keinoin. Teoksen jälkisanat ovat laatineet filosofi Elisa Aaltola ja kirjailija Laura Gustafsson.
Hanna Kukko (s. 1995) on sarjakuvantekijä ja taideopettaja. Katso eläintä on hänen toinen sarjakuvaromaaninsa.
Steve Stivaktis: Gérard eli tartu miekkaasi
Kaikilla on elämässään vaikeuksia 15-vuotiaana. Hektorilla niitä on ehkä liikaakin.
Hän kamppailee ahdistavaa ja vihamielistä ympäristöä vastaan ja miettii, mikä hänen paikkansa tässä maailmassa on – miten lapsuus kohtaa aikuisuuden, miten voi rakentaa identiteettiä, jota lähipiiri ei tunnista tai ymmärrä, mitä perhe voi merkitä, miten taide ja tarinat voivat olla pelastusrengas pimeyden täyttämässä maailmassa.
Pikkukylässä vietetyn kesän eristyneisyyden ja jännitteiden sekä perhettä piinaavan tunkeilijan ja sekasortoisen kodin aiheuttaman vihan syövereistä Hektor lähtee tutkimusmatkalle luovuutensa ja mielikuvituksensa avulla. Rinnalleen hän saa odottamattoman liittolaisen etsiessään aseita ja keinoja puolustaakseen itseään sekä kaikkea, mitä hän rakastaa.

Riika Ruottinen: Wilmanpilaaja
Wilmanpilaaja seuraa yhden riviopettajan tarinaa peruskoulukoneiston kiihtyvissä rattaissa ja todistaa koulujen nykytodellisuuteen varkain uineet vieraat: tehokkuusvaatimukset, polarisoituvat sosiaaliset kentät ja kaiken lävistävän uupumuksen niin lapsissa kuin aikuisissa.
Tekijää kovasti muistuttava päähenkilö yrittää korjata koneiston pienempiä ja isompia vikoja parhaalla tahdollaan ja hupenevilla voimillaan, mutta polttoainemittarin vilkuttaessa yhä punaisempaa ja Wilman sinisempää viimeinen seinä alkaa häämöttää.
Sukkahousuhieltä, dieseliltä ja pohjaan palaneelta kahvilta tuoksuva Wilmanpilaaja on itsenäinen jatkotarina sarjakuvateos Porno sijaisen (2019) päähenkilön myöhemmistä vaiheista opettajan uralla.
Riika Ruottinen (s. 1981) on oululainen sarjakuvantekijä, sanailija ja duunariopettaja, joka piirtää ihmisen kokoisia tarinoita itseään säästämättä. Hänen sarjakuviaan on luonnehdittu tragikoomisiksi, koskettaviksi ja oivaltaviksi. Ruottiselta on aikaisemmin ilmestynyt sarjakuvateokset Porno sijainen (2019) ja Keskenmenosaappaat (2011).
Nykysarjakuvan suurteos uutena laitoksena.
Marjane Satrapin omaelämäkerrallinen Persepolis on koskettava sarjakuvaromaani nuoren tytön kasvusta Iranin islamilaisen vallan ikeessä. Nyt kaikki neljä osaa julkaistaan yksissä kansissa, Satrapin uudella esipuheella.
Teheran 1978: kahdeksanvuotias Marjane unelmoi ryhtyvänsä isona profeetaksi, joka pelastaa maailman.
Persepolis kertoo Satrapin ja hänen perheensä vaiheista läpi Iranin vallankumouksen, sodan, ja maanpakolaisuuden. Se on kertomus yhteiskunnallisesta mullistuksesta, mutta samalla kasvukivuista, ensirakkauksista, elämästä.
”Persepolis on ollut suurmenestys monessa maassa. Teos onkin inhimillinen, liikuttava ja vilpitön. Sen sanoma totalitarismin ja uskonkiihkoilun vaarasta on aina ajankohtainen.” – Heikki Jokinen, Helsingin Sanomat
Suomen tasavallan presidentti on polttavan rakastunut, eikä pysty keskittymään työhän, itseensä, mihinkään.
Sisäministeriön valistunut arvaus on Mikro Maniaksit, nuo luonnon pikku pirulaiset, jotka sotkevat ihmisen ajatukset ja tunteet. On aika kutistaa joku ja lähettää hänet presidentin sisälle siivoamaan kiduttava rakkauden tunne.

Mika Lietzén: Skotlannin matkakirja
Millainen on maa jonka kansalliseläin on yksisarvinen?
Maa, joka on raivokkaan itsepäinen, mutta kuitenkin kaukaisen Lontoon alaisuudessa. Kylmä ja karu maa, josta ovat lähtöisin golf, puhelin, televisio, jalkapallo, leivänpaahdin, jääkaappi ja vedettävä vessa… muiden muassa.

Mika Lietzen (s. 1974) on turkulainen sarjakuvantekijä, jonka tunnusmerkkejä ovat selkeä piirrosjälki ja koskettavat tarinat.
Lietzenin aiempia teoksia ovat mm. Alkoholi (2023) ja Death Metal (2024).
Jussi Piironen: Kauhuviidakon valtias
Varoitushuuto kaikuu läpi viidakon.
Aseistautuneet tunkeilijat ovat saapuneet.
Kun Joan Newton vuosien jälkeen palaa kauhujen viidakkoon, hänellä on mukanaan joukko paholaisia univormuissa.
Heidän tavoitteenaan on löytää Joanin ex-mies, jota asukkaat kutsuvat Kauhuviidakon valtiaaksi. Häntä pelkäävät viidakon eri alueilla vaanivat verenhimoiset hirviötkin.

.Mika Lietzén: Hitaan juoksijan kirja
Juokseminen on enemmän kuin liikuntaa.
Se on aikaa ajatuksille, yllätyksiä jokaisen kukkulan ja tienmutkan takana. Se on pieni seikkailu lähialueilla, jotka luulee tuntevansa, mutta jotka usein ovat täysin vieraita. Tutkimusmatka paikkoihin joissa ei ole aiemmin ollut syytä käydä.
Hitaan juoksijan kirja on erilainen kirja juoksemisesta. Siinä ei kilpailla eikä voiteta mestaruuksia. Siinä juostaan hitaasti, ympäristöä tutkaillen, kaupunkirakennetta ja kapitalismin syntejä pohdiskellen. Siinä ei liikuta eksoottisissa paikoissa, vaan juostaan Turussa. Tutuiksi tulevat Raisionjoen pastoraaliset peltomaisemat, Pansion ja Pernon ongelmalähiöt, Kärsämäen vanha teollisuusalue, Hirvensalon ökyomakotitalot ja lopuksi Herttuankulma, jonka tiiviisti rakennettu kerrostalomuuri herättää juoksijassa apokalyptisiä ajatuksia.

Taneli Kemppi: Kerrosten välistä

Kerrosten välistä on armoton ja viisas kirja, jota ei voi laskea käsistään. Ironia, henkilökohtaisuus ja vilpittömyys kietoutuvat yhteiskuntakriittiseksi tarinaksi lihavuudesta, joka kulkee kolmannen luokan painokäyristä kohti paljon peloteltua aikaista hautaa. Vai voisiko sen sittenkin välttää, jos maailma vain vihaisi lihavia ihmisiä vähemmän?

Kemppi on pitänyt sarjakuvablogia ja julkaissut omakustanteisia sarjakuvapienlehtiä alan tapahtumissa. Kemppi on ollut myös mukana Rikkinäisen mielen kuvat -antologiassa. Kerrosten välistä on hänen ensimmäinen sarjakuvaromaaninsa.

Martta-Kaisa Virran esikoisteos sijoittuu Berliiniin ja kertoo muun muassa taiteilijuudesta, lapsen saamisesta, puhuvista linnuista, saunamajurista ja koti-ikävästä.
Sarjakuva yhdistää elettyä elämää ja mielikuvituksellisesti kierroksille meneviä tilanteita toisiinsa päiväkirjaksi, jossa ei ole tylsää minuuttiakaan.
Martta-Kaisa Virta (s.1983) on Berliinissä asuva ja työskentelevä suomalainen sarjakuva- ja kuvataiteilija sekä kuvittaja.
Hän sekoittaa havaintoja ympäristöstä, ihmisistä ja ilmiöistä mustepulloonsa, josta hän suodattaa ideat paperille piirtäen.

Maalta matkannut suippokorvainen Moski ihmettelee ystäviensä kanssa nykymaailman menoa, mutta onneksi kaupungeista löytyy vielä myös kirjakauppiaita, hillontekijöitä ja kentaureja.
Strengin tausta puutarhurina ja eläintenhoitajana näkyy hänen ohuen ohuilla tusseilla tekemässään piirrosjäljessä, jossa kasvit ja eläimet on kuvattu tarkkaan, viivoja säästämättä.
Hänen sarjakuvissaan on ajalle vierasta kiireettömyyttä – eräs tarinan hahmoista toteaakin osuvasti olevansa “elävä jäänne muinaisilta ajoilta”. Maailma voi olla kylmä ja kohtalokas paikka, mutta Strengin tarinoiden hahmot ovat aina valmiita hyppäämään uljaan ratsun selkään.

Anne Streng (s. 1956) on Myrskylässä asuva itseoppinut sarjakuvantekijä ja kuvittaja.
Hänen sarjakuviaan on ilmestynyt erilaisissa pienjulkaisuissa ja omakustanteissa yli 40 vuoden ajan. Julkisuutta kaihtava taiteilija ei ole pitänyt itsestään meteliä, mutta hänen omaleimainen tyylinsä on toiminut innoittajana monille nuoremmille sarjakuvantekijöille.

Jaana Suorsa: Mie, Taivaanjaara – Tarina Reidar Särestöniemestä
Mie, Taivaanjaara on graafinen tarina Reidar Särestöniemestä, hänen maailmansa eläinhahmoista ja symboliikasta.
Särestöniemi tunsi olevansa ulkopuolinen maailmassa, henkipatto homoseksuaali. Hän ei viihtynyt ihmishahmossa ja samastui siksi vapaisiin eläimiin. Reidar vastusti metsien tuhoamista ja suojeli pohjoisen luonnon villieläimiä. Hänelle tärkeä eläinhahmo oli taivaanjaara (taivaanvuohi), joka toi kevään ja valon.
Särestöniemeä ahdisti pohjoisen kaamosaika, pitkä pimeys, ennen kuin hän hyväksyi sen ja alkoi maalata talven pelon pois.

Jaana Suorsa on oululaislähtöinen, nykyään Akaassa asuva kulttuurituottaja, kirjailija ja piirtäjä. Häneltä on julkaistu sarjakuva-, proosa-, tieto- ja lorukirjoja.
Rallu & Wallu: Punaniska palaa!
Punaniska, mies ja ääni, tulivat tutuiksi suomalaisille jo 90-luvulla Helsingin sanomien sarjakuvasivuilta ja omana 15 + 1 albumin sarjana.
Vihattu ja rakastettu laulava cowboy on senkin jälkeen harvakseltaan esiintynyt julkisuudessa mm. pelaamassa golfia, laulamassa levylle ja näyttelemässä kesäteatterissa.
Nyt jo sarjakuvasankarinakin kypsään ikään ehtinyt reikäistä banjoa soittava trubaduurimme on päättänyt julkaista albumin muodossa painokelpoisimmat osat seikkailuistaan omituisista tapahtumistaan tunnetussa Suomessa. Monet heistä ovat Punaniskalle ja Suomen kansalle entuudestaan tuttuja ja toimivat samalla oppaina sahdinhuuruisessa rallissa, joka päätyy tuhansia järviä väistellen suuriin juhannusjuhliin.
Albumi sisältää kyseenalaista ja aikansa elänyttä huumoria aiheista, joiden olisi syytä levätä rauhassa. Syystä tai toisesta ne kuitenkin putkahtelevat esiin näinä levottomina aikoina yllättävissä paikoissa ja kulmakarvoja nostattavissa muodoissa.

Nuori opiskelija kuulee häneltä huikean tarinan siitä, miten kylmän sodan suurvallat kokeilivat kilvan eri eläinten kestävyyttä avaruudessa – eettisistä näkökohdista huolimatta.

Dan Dare on scifi-sankari, jonka tarinat ovat täynnä toimintaa, jännitystä ja huumoria. Purppurakuolema-tarina julkaistiin ensimmäisen kerran brittiläisessä Eagle-sarjakuvalehdessä vuonna 1958.
Tarina alkaa jurakaudelta.
Avaruusoliot keräävät eläimiä eläintarhaansa. Kötsal on lentolisko, joka onnistuu karkaamaan vangitsijoiltaan ihmisten pariin.
Hän sopeutuu helposti nykyaikaan, mutta kun muukalaiset tulevat etsimään häntä Kötsal päättää jatkaa pakomatkaansa tulevaisuuteen.
Onneksi hänen ei tarvitse matkustaa yksin. Matkan aikana Kötsal ystävineen joutuu seuraamaan maapallon vääjäämätöntä tuhoa aitiopaikalta. Ajassa voi matkustaa, mutta vain eteenpäin. Lopulta myös muukalaisten arvoitus ratkeaa.
Vakavista teemoista huolimatta Kötsal on lempeä ja paikoin humoristinen kertomus erilaisuuden hyväksymisestä ja ystävyydestä.

Dav Pilkey on yhdysvaltalainen kirjailija ja kuvittaja, jonka avulla miljoonat lapset ovat löytäneet lukemisen ilon. Publishers Weekly -lehti valitsi Pilkeyn vuoden 2019 henkilöksi ja kirjoitti, että Pilkey tekee eniten lasten lukuinnostuksen lisäämiseksi sitten J. K. Rowlingin. Teos ei pyri tarkkaan historialliseen ajankuvaan, vaan antaa mielikuvituksen laukata vapaasti.
Teksteissä käytetty Keski-Pohjanmaan ja erityisesti Kalajoen murre tuo tarinoihin paikallisväriä ja hilpeää eläväisyyttä.
Kuvitusta varten tekijät valokuvasivat vanhoja pihapiirejä sekä rakennuksia sisältä ja ulkoa. Lukuisat paikalliset antoivat arvokasta apua murteen ja perinteiden tuntemuksellaan.

Jokaisella kylmien murhien etsivällä on tapaus, joka jää painamaan hänen mieltään hänen uransa jälkeen.
Mark Douglasille tuo tapaus on 16-vuotiaan Scott Dunawayn murha vuonna 1975. Tuolloin Alabamaa ravistellut hurrikaani Eloise tuhosi puistoon kallo murskattuna dumpatun ruumiin ympärillä olleet johtolangat, ja tapaus painui pimeäksi.
Mark avasi tapauksen uudelleen vuonna 2002 ja hän oli varma siitä, että oli selvittänyt syylliset, mutta hän ei pystynyt keräämään pitäviä todisteita teoriansa tueksi.
Nyt kaksikymmentä vuotta myöhemmin hän on päättänyt saattaa tekijät vastuuseen, koska hänen ei enää tarvitse pelata sääntöjen mukaan, eikä hänellä ole enää omassa elämässään mitään menetettävää.

Originally created for the Nanaimo Art Gallery’s group show “Gutters are Elastic” between July 15 to September 23, 2023, Pauls decided to expand the work into a full length book.
Playing with the connection between land, regalia, performance and heritage, Pauls follows in the footsteps of Tiger Tateishi, Hironori Kikuchi and Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas with his dreamlike narrative.
Cole Pauls is a Champagne and Aishihik Citizen and Tahltan comic artist, illustrator & printmaker hailing from Haines Junction (Yukon Territory) with a BFA in Illustration from Emily Carr University.
