Kesällä 1904 Gustaf Karlovitš teki päätöksen hakeutua rintamalle.
Samalla ammuttiin lähtölaukaus Mannerheim-myytin synnylle.
Gustafin veljet vastustivat ajatusta ja toivoivat hänen palaavan Suomeen, mutta Pietarin ratsastuskoulun mallieskadroonan päällikkö ei ollut valmis luopumaan sotilasurastaan.
Japanin hyökkäys Venäjän Keltaisen meren tukikohtaan ja siitä seurannut sota, tarjosi 37-vuotiaalle everstiluutnantille mahdollisuuden hakea uutta suuntaa myös umpikujaan ajautuneeseen yksityiselämään.
Venäläisupseerit pyrkivät sankoin joukoin Mantsuriaan edistääkseen uraansa, sillä tiedossa on helppo voitto.
Aluksi Mannerheim keskittyy vaalimaan kuria ja hoitamaan omat tehtävänsä, samalla hän tekee tarkkoja havaintoja.
Paroni saa ennen pitkää tulikasteensa, mutta kaikkien yllätykseksi sotaonni Mantšuriassa suosii jatkuvasti japanilaisia. Vetäytymistaistelun kuluttaessa joukkoja Venäjän armeijan tehottomuus alkaa paljastua.
Muuttaessaan Mannerheimin tekstiä vuoropuheluksi ja kuviksi, sarjakuvantekijä Reima Mäkinen on perehtynyt aiheeseensa yli kymmenen vuoden ajan.
Teos syntyi päiväkirjan aukkoja paikkaavien rintamakirjeiden, kirjoista ja sanomalehdistä löytyneiden aikalaiskuvausten, hämärien karttojen sekä muutaman tuhannen valokuvan avittamana.
Teos on tarkistettu ja uudelleen muokattu versio Mantšuria – Mannerheimin tulikaste -sarjakuvaromaanista (2019/loppuunmyyty).

Taidemuseo ei olekaan ihan sitä, mitä Niki ja Lumi olivat ajatelleet.
Mitä ysiluokan Futis-Alfa tekee siellä? Mitä tapahtuu, jos museossa ottaa päikkärit? Löytävätkö Lumi ja Niki ikinä serkun teosta maailmanlopun hevosten ja kummallisten performanssien keskeltä?
Breathe – niinku hengitä -sarjakuvakirjassa pohditaan, miltä aikuisten museomaailma näyttää nuoren silmin. Ennen kaikkea se kuitenkin kertoo siitä, miten tärkeää on jakaa parhaan kaverin kanssa innostumiset, pettymykset, ahdistuksen tunteet ja tietenkin sipsipussi.

Det viktigaste med resan är naturligtvis att komma bort från ”Fisboda” men de ska också titta på Lumis kusins konstverk som blivit valt (!!!) till en utställning på ett stort konstmuseum.
Kusinen har bara inte gått med på att berätta hur verket ser ut.
Konstmuseet är ändå inte riktigt vad Lumi och Niki hade förväntat sig.
Vad gör fotis-Alfa från nian där? Vad händer om man tar en tupplur i museet? Kommer Lumi och Niki någonsing att hitta kusinens konstverk mitt bland apokalypshästar och alla underliga performanser?
Breathe – andas liksom utforskar hur de vuxnas museivärld ser ut genom de ungas ögon. Men framför allt berättar boken om hur viktigt det är att dela glädje, besvikelser, ångestkänslor och naturligtvis en chipspåse med sin bästa vän.
Bokens författare Melanie Orenius och Laura Porola är bildkonstpedagoger vid Amos Rex konstmuseum.
Händelserna är inspirerade av verkliga möten mellan museipersonal och besökare och väcks till liv av Ulla Donners illustrationer.
